I went to Starbucks Coffee Company a few evenings ago after finishing a long shift at work, mostly because I needed somewhere quiet to sit for a bit before driving home. I usually make coffee at home, so I don’t stop at Starbucks very often anymore, but this visit reminded me why people keep coming back. The store was busy without feeling chaotic. There were college students studying, a couple people having meetings, and others just relaxing with headphones on. Even with a steady line, the employees stayed patient and friendly. One barista noticed I was undecided and recommended a shaken espresso drink that ended up being way better than what I originally planned to order. What stood out most was how comfortable the atmosphere felt. Some coffee shops try too hard to feel trendy, but this location had a relaxed vibe where nobody seemed rushed to leave. I ended up staying almost an hour catching up on emails and honestly forgot how stressed I’d been earlier in the day. My drink came out quickly and tasted balanced — strong coffee flavor without being overly sweet. I also grabbed a slice of banana loaf that was surprisingly fresh. Honestly, I’ve just had two great experiences (this year) of stumbling into a free cup of coffee here. Two weeks ago, I guess the barista called off work, so the Harris Teeter manager was running the Starbucks. He told me he couldn’t make anything special, but he’d be happy to give me a free cup of coffee. I humbly obliged. Today, I walked up to the counter and the barista had a drink in his hand and said “What size were you going to order?” I just looked at him puzzled. Then he said, “Because I accidentally just made the wrong drink and you could just have this one.” (I think his name was Chris, so props to him) All in all, I’m happy walking over to this Starbucks in the Teeter as opposed to fighting hordes for the one around the corner. Probably the rudest service experience, not only at Starbucks but at any food/service establishment. Standing around, gossiping, and giving me the worst possible attitude/tone. Never going to this Starbucks again, the baristas need a tremendous attitude check.
